1. I am toward the end of my medical career and have had many roles and experiences in the US and Canadian healthcare. I have benefitted from the workings of CMPA both as a provider of opinion and as a claimant. I enjoy the roles of CMPA in providing education, safety opportunities, and in particular direct communication by CMPA representatives at a number of meetings. I am a firm believer that as a physician we must 'do no harm' and also that when 'harm' happens, it has not been our intention. I value the work of CMPA in helping those of us in these unfortunate situations and in providing advice, legal assistance, and comforting actions. I would like to be a part of a team that can provide valuable help to physicians, learning at the same time the nuances of a new position and opportunity to learn from the experience.
2. I bring many years of clinical experience (20 in United States and 26 in Canada) since graduation from Dalhousie University Medical School in 1973. I have served as journal editor-in-chief (14 years), Residency program director (8 years) Fellowship director (19 years), Department Head (5 years) and have been involved in Clinical Research for most of my practice career. I have published extensively and have organized many clinical meetings as well as teaching workshops. I have been an expert witness mostly in the US and for the defence in 10 cases and given opinions on a number of others. I have also lost my own court case and know the devastated feeling of going to court and the scrutiny it entails. Much of my teaching experience has been in the operating room with residents and fellows, but also a considerable amount in the Delivery Suite again with residents and students. This always makes one work very diligently and carefully to avoid errors while allowing learners to participate. While Obstetrician-Gynecologists may represent only 3% of the physician members of CMPA, this group is at extreme risk for adverse outcomes, some of which incur large settlements. I am eager to learn more while working to the benefit of the physician members of CMPA.
3. While coming from a small province and population I do have some understanding as well as physician contacts across Canada. I would work to help all physicians in improving their practice safety, education in patient communication, and understanding of their own limitations. I would enjoy serving on the Case Control Committee as well as another Committee deemed appropriate by the Council.
