I have been working since 2020 as an anesthesiologist at the Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec. Previously, I practiced at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg for 6 years. I would like to submit my nomination as a member of CMPA Council for Region 6 (Québec)-Division B.
Having been in medical practice for 7 years, my clinical experience has allowed me to identify challenges that physicians deal with in their early years of practice. Working in both English and French-speaking settings gives me an unparalleled perspective on the differences in health care systems across the country. Working in the operating room on a daily basis has also allowed me to hone my teamwork skills.
I have been involved for several years in multiple committees, which has allowed me to develop my leadership skills. I have been mentoring medical students and residents. I have assisted physicians early on in their practice to ensure good integration. I am committed to the well-being of my colleagues and all physicians. As a member of the anesthesiology program’s management committee, I gained knowledge of governance, I learned how to develop objectives to achieve the program's mission and had to manage the department's budget. I also acquired knowledge in finance (compensation, investment) by serving on the economic committee of my provincial medical association Doctors Manitoba, which is an asset to the CMPA Council. I am involved in teaching residents with a focus on patient safety in the context of high-risk practice. I also support the professional development of physicians by being an ACLS instructor.
Becoming a member of the CMPA Board is an excellent opportunity to represent my colleagues in ensuring the governance and missions of the CMPA. The rapid changes we are facing in our practice (telemedicine, e-health, artificial intelligence, individual data protection, population health) are introducing a new kind of medico-legal risk. It is essential to assist CMPA members so that they feel supported and secure in dealing with these issues. Ensuring physicians’ interests are respected, while promoting quality and safe patient care, is a challenge that I wish to take up within the Council.
