Ontario physicians are continuing to experience challenging times with a pandemic and with government cutbacks — along with increasing patient expectations and risks to patient privacy, due to fast changing technology. We need, more than ever, a strong and experienced CMPA council that can meet these challenges successfully and address them effectively.
As a physician who also has a law degree and who is in active clinical practice caring for a diverse population of patients including recent immigrants, religious and sexual minorities — I understand all these challenges. Since I joined CMPA Council in 2012, I have worked on many committees, and presently serve as Second Vice President on the Executive, Governance, Pension, HRCC, and MSRC where I have seen first hand the extraordinary commitment of the CMPA to protect the professional integrity of physicians and to promote safe medical care.
During these past 8 years, I have gained invaluable knowledge and insight into the workings of the CMPA and the challenges it faces. I look forward to modernizing the CMPA with our new excellent CEO, Dr. Lisa Calder, in a collaborative way including incorporating recent advances in Data Science.
The CMPA takes its strategic goals of assisting physicians, contributing to safe medical care and supporting the medical liability system very seriously. I share these core values and enthusiastically support the CMPA in its efforts. For example, in 2017, the CMPA has instituted a member support program specifically aimed at identifying at-risk members, as well as developing a tailored action plan to assist them in returning to a safe and meaningful medical practice. This service model is based on the concept of mutuality.
You can be assured that the CMPA, through its elected council and management team, is fully committed to meeting our current and future medical liability protection needs. One of the concerns that I have shared, along with many councillors, is the long-term financial sustainability of the CMPA. I have enthusiastically endorsed council and management’s approach to purchase an insurance program to mitigate year-to-year volatility, as members and stakeholders have indicated that this is one of their most difficult issues when it comes to year-to-year financial planning.
With your support, I will continue to ensure that the CMPA is there for you now and in the future.
