Candidate statement

I was elected to CMPA Council in 2017 and my first term on Council has been a rewarding experience. CMPA has the privilege of working with over 100,000 physician members across Canada. The strength of this organization lies in its commitment to provide support to physicians, by physicians. When you call the CMPA for help, a physician colleague will answer your call. They understand the pressures you are working under, and what it is like to work in today's complex medical environment. Similarly, the governing Council is made up of practicing physicians. As a Councillor, I have been proud to take part in forming the 2019-2022 Strategic Plan which provides an unwavering commitment to the core values of member support, safe medical care and support of the medical liability system. As Chair of the Membership and Stakeholder Relations Committee, I have the ability to be a strong advocate for Canadian physicians by ensuring the CMPA works with important stakeholders to protect the integrity and working environment of our members. This Committee also receives feedback from members as to how the CMPA can best meet your needs. As the reality of practicing medicine in Canada changes, the CMPA will continue to adapt its support and services to meet members' evolving needs. In my practice as an Interventional Cardiologist, I am positioned to understand the challenges of a number of diverse groups. I am in the "first 15" years of practice, but owing to a long residency structure in my field, also share many practice characteristics with mid-career physicians. As an Interventional Cardiologist, I work in a practice environment which straddles surgical and medical specialties, and one which has considerable overlap with urban and rural hospitals. I feel that my ability to connect with a diverse group of members places me in an ideal position to provide a strong governance role in our large organization. When re-elected, I will build on relationships developed and experience gained in my first term and bring an enthusiastic approach and strong commitment to the living the values of the CMPA through the Strategic Plan and its implementation.
