Edmonton, Alberta
Family physician, Certificate of Added Competence in Addiction Medicine

Area 2, Division A
(ALBERTA)

Candidate statement

I am interested in this role because I am a lifelong advocate for physicians. I value fairness, integrity and moral courage and do my best to model these traits. I am a passionate and innovative leader who maintains transparency at all levels to achieve long-lasting goals and solutions. I believe that by increasing the cognitive diversity of our teams we improve decision-making, and I have confidence that I would add to the CMPA council in this regard. My beliefs align with CMPA's commitment to assisting physicians, protecting physicians' professional integrity, and working collaboratively with stakeholders to deliver safe care to patients.

As a mid-career physician, I bring over 20 years of practice experience gained through a wide variety of settings including addiction medicine for the last 7 years, cancer survivorship, and urban and rural family medicine. I have been a physician leader for 10 years and a community leader for 15 years. My unique skillset has been gained through multiple provincial and national roles, as well as at the grassroots level as a leader of several successful community initiatives. Some of these roles include serving on the Board of the Alberta Medical Association for 4.5 years, leading the CMA Equity in Medicine Community of Interest, contributing as an Executive member to the AMA Section of Addiction Medicine and the Section of General Practice, founding a community school wellness team, and most recently, filling a gap and creating a local networking group for women in health.

If elected, it would be my privilege to represent the physicians of Alberta on the CMPA council. I am interested in looking at the fairness and transparency of medical liability protection rates paid by members. I am also interested in the medico-legal ramifications of physician communication via new social media platforms. I am social media savvy and use social media to connect with physicians and learners across the country, as well as with politicians and the media (you can find me on Twitter at @KimKellyMD). I would work hard on your behalf to ensure that the CMPA continues to support physicians effectively in a changing environment and in a sustainable manner.
