Candidate statement

Dear Colleagues
I am honoured to seek your support for a second term as a Councilor for the CMPA. Council is the governing body for our not for profit mutual defence association. The CMPA is unique in the world in that it provides medical liability protection for the vast majority of physicians in a single country. My first three-year term (2016-2019) was a period of significant learning regarding the essential role of Medical Liability Protection in the health system. I have learned first hand (and am inspired by) the diligent, passionate work your Council members from across Canada do on behalf of our members. For physicians, the CMPA is among the most trusted organizations in medicine today. These are indeed challenging times to be practicing medicine in Canada.
The work of Council benefits from a diversity of generalist and specialist, academic and non academic voices. I have practiced for most of my career as an Anesthesiologist and Critical Care physician in a community hospital in a suburban environment in Newmarket Ontario. Recently, I have moved my practice to the Toronto General Hospital. It has been a welcome opportunity to see how the “other half” lives and experience the joys and challenges of academic practice.
My past administrative and leadership roles, and my work at the Royal College prepared me well to be an effective member of Council during my first term. While serving as a Councilor I learned the governance role and responsibilities required to administer this large and important organization. For the last two years of my term I chaired a Council committee - the Member Stakeholder Relations Committee, providing me with a deeper understanding of the CMPA’s interaction with members and the health system. I also served on the Case Review Committee, contributing to decisions at the coalface of the most challenging cases the CMPA encounters.
I ask for your support in the upcoming election for Division B in Ontario. I believe that my diverse clinical and administrative experience and my past experience on CMPA Council position me well to serve our members and the CMPA in its mission to protect the professional integrity of physicians and promote safe medical care in Canada. I understand the responsibility of this office. If elected, I assure you I will serve with energy, curiosity and humility.
Please feel free to contact me msullivan@southlakeregional.org should you wish to discuss any aspect of my candidacy.
