The CMPA occupies a unique position in safeguarding, on behalf of members, that there is an effective and reliable medical liability system. Nearly 100,000 physicians can practise medicine confident in the knowledge that when negligent errors have occurred, their patients will be reasonably compensated. CMPA is also in a position to contribute to safe medical care by understanding risk management and the evolving educational needs of Canadian physicians, while advocating for system improvement that can contribute to safer medical care.
I have a deep passion for what the CMPA stands for and I also believe in strong stewardship. I have had the privilege of being your representative on CMPA Council for the last six years, while also serving on several CMPA committees. I have had the opportunity to witness first hand the commitment of purpose, exceptional work by dedicated management and staff, as well as committed Council members; all aimed at protecting Canadian physicians from litigation while at the same time ensuring that the integrity of physicians is safeguarded.
In my diverse work experience over the years I have had the opportunity to interact with many different groups of physicians, which has allowed me to hear their concerns and the problems they face on a daily basis. The healthcare landscape continues to change rapidly and I regularly hear about pressures of resource limitations and strain on the healthcare system that can potentially contribute to adverse outcomes for patients through no fault of the physician. I hear of increasing stress and burnout even when physicians are not even involved in civil litigation, college or hospital complaints. This is very disquieting.
To continue to do its important work the CMPA must be well acquainted with and empathetic to the multiple challenges faced by our members in caring for patients and the healthcare delivery settings that they work in. As well as being forward-looking and innovative for the future the Association, it will be increasingly important for the CMPA to find ways to meet the evolving needs of members and to demonstrate support in newer challenging areas such as when individual physicians find their integrity threatened eg in press and social media.
I have the passion, ability and time to serve as your representative and am seeking your support and the vote that will allow me to continue to represent the physicians of British Columbia and the Yukon as a member of CMPA Council.
