I am proud of what the CMPA stands for and its mission state: "The CMPA’s mission is to protect the professional integrity of physicians and promote safe medical care in Canada. Our vision is to be valued as an essential component of the Canadian healthcare system".
While most Canadian physicians tend to associate the CMPA as the premier organization that provides physicians with medical liability advice and representation, my interest in joining the CMPA council is to participate in developing a medical system culture that assists in reducing unnecessary medicolegal risks and enhancing the practice of safe medicine. In addition I would like to participate in a forum that helps to ensure that physicians, the public and government are dealing with a fair and effective medical liability system. Finally, I am of the opinion that the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced the need for virtual medical care. This modality of care has numerous benefits when it comes to improving patient access to care. However, the CMPA will need to help lead the way of how this practice can be implemented safely in an environment of dated privacy legislation, varied medical provincial college approaches on the provision of virtual care and a possible rise in claims related to virtual practice.
More specifically, I am aware that, "the primary purpose of the Council is to foster, through sound governance, the long-term success of the Association consistent with its Strategic Plan and responsibilities to the members." I am aware that my role in these areas will be delivered through participation on various committees (e.g., audit, executive, case review, investment, governance, pension, human resources, safe medical care, stakeholder, extent of assistance and nominating committees). I am also receptive to what I hear from colleagues with respect to their current CMPA membership concerns (e.g., rising college complaints, impact of unregulated rating websites on reputation, practicing in an environment of strained resources, implementing a clinical practice in the COVID-19 era, rising CMPA premiums).
My diverse clinical, administrative, legal, business, and academic background (as outlined below) will allow me to contribute to the CMPA's mission and strategic objectives, while representing the stakeholders of my region. I plan to bring a thoughtful and collaborative approach to council in order to ensure objectives are met in a timely and effective way.
