Candidate statement

I present my qualifications as a candidate for re-election to the Council of the CMPA. I earned my degree in Medicine from the University of British Columbia (1969) and am certified in Internal medicine and Cardiology (FRCPC).

I am a Clinical Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at UBC and am on staff at the Vancouver General Hospital.

I am known for my devotion to teaching throughout my cardiology career. I am a sought-after clinical teacher with stellar teaching evaluations.

I have received more than 12 major teaching awards (national and international) over my career.

With experience in knowledge translation, I have been a member of the writing committee for national guidelines. I have authored and co-authored multiple papers and teaching tools used nationally to educate primary care physicians, internal medicine specialists, and cardiologists.

At UBC, I run a teaching practice and have had the privilege of mentoring over 650 residents and 400 fourth year medical students from 21 countries.

I have delivered more than 2,100 presentations in cardiology and patterns of practice, many in the realm of medicine and law, and/or ethics

The Canadian Medical Protective Association is a unique organization that has been expanding its role in improving health care through new and innovative education programs as well as standing on behalf of Canadian physicians.

In my first term, I worked in the human resources and pension arena. As a “novice” I tried to bring fresh perspectives into discussions.

I have been privileged to work with the governance committee and after studying the bylaws was able to assist in reviewing numerous aspects of the governance manual, and, most importantly, working on newer modalities of assessing and improving the skills of new and returning councilors.

The health care landscape continues to undergo major transformations with rapid increase in use of technology, such as electronic medical records, artificial intelligence and alternate payment plans for physicians. These advances require continual update of physician knowledge and careful review of potential negative consequences.

As the CMPA continues to expand and embrace efforts to improve patterns of practice and enhance health care, I am uniquely situated to participate in the development of Knowledge Translation and Continuing Professional Development programs. If re-elected, I will continue playing an active role in all aspects of the CMPA.
