Candidate statement

Thank you for considering me for a role on CMPA council. Like almost all physicians in Canada, I have been mostly a “passive” member of the CMPA since residency. But I am now passionate and eager to start playing an active role in furthering the CMPA in its vision and mission. Such a role dovetails perfectly with my career and expertise, as outlined below.

I have had longstanding involvement in bioethics and medico-legal matters. I have co-chaired the Bioethics Curriculum at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine for the past 15 years. My MSc (Bioethics 2005) involved an exploration of industry-sponsored medical research and conflict of interest. Most recently, I have co-authored a new edition of a well-known textbook in bioethics, Doing Right: A Practical Guide to Ethics for Medical Trainees and Physicians (Oxford University Press, 2019). I have deep knowledge around many medicolegal issues, including informed consent, confidentiality/privacy, capacity, end of life issues, boundaries, reproductive issues, genomics, and ethical issues in social media. While I appreciate the role of council is primarily to support policy and administrative governance at the CMPA, I think my background in bioethics, as an educator, and as an administrator will prove useful to CMPA council.

As a physician with over 22 years of surgical experience, I would also bring to the CMPA council an intimate knowledge of front-line medical issues facing CMPA members, as well as a desire to learn and contribute to council. I am confident my judgment and communication skills will be an asset to council. I am also passionate about business and governance. And finally, as anyone working in the medical field knows, good medicine is grounded in a team approach and a culture of respect for one’s colleagues. This is a guiding principle of my life and it is how I would function on council.

If elected, I will work diligently to fulfil my role on council and subcommittees. I believe successful organizations must change and grow in order to remain effective and relevant. The CMPA is no different. I will bring to council new ideas, robust curiosity, and willingness to question the status quo. Thank you for your consideration
