A graduate of medical school in Ireland in 1982, Dr. Paul Farnan completed a residency in general practice before immigrating to Canada in 1986. From his roots in rural Canadian family medicine, his practice is now positioned at the interface of occupational and addiction medicine.
Dr. Farnan is a clinical associate professor at the University of British Columbia’s department of family practice and a faculty member of Joule’s Physician Leadership Institute, where he teaches physician health and engagement. He has a long-standing interest in the issues of physician stress and burnout, the challenges faced by younger colleagues, and the tensions that often exist between clinical and administrative medicine. For almost 6 years, Dr. Farnan was the executive director of the Physician Health Program of British Columbia, and is a past chair of the Canadian Physician Health Network.
He currently lives in Vancouver with his physician spouse, who are both very proud of the wonderful adults their five children have become.
