Candidate statement
I strongly believe that being a physician is one of the greatest honors society can bestow on us. The medical profession now needs to think and act very differently as Canada addresses the current and ongoing COVID crisis. I will strive to personally provide some passionate leadership in this new direction.
Strategic orientation - I try to see the big picture. After having had the honor and privilege of serving and leading several organizations provincially, nationally and internationally, I now fully understand how the medical profession has to become more actively engaged and accountable to the public. We all need to live up to the public’s high expectations of our profession. I can help be part of the crucial discussion that will strategically make sure we as a profession are meeting and exceeding our social contract. We should not be afraid to begin setting a new course together.
Judgment - The years that I have spent in the clinical and academic trenches have firmed my resolve to look at all aspects of issues and not be too quick to try and fix things. As an experienced emergency physician I am comfortable dealing with the unexpected. As a Hopkins trained preventive health physician I fully understand the potential of meaningful engagement and frank discussions with all audiences.
Communications - I am a natural storyteller and love communicating with diverse audiences. I listen more than I speak and I am a firm believer in only using words if absolutely necessary. The medical profession is all about communications. I have extensive experience with various audiences and am very at ease with all messaging mediums.
Business and financial acumen - Conservative while still entrepreneurial! A responsible fiscal steward always prepared to ask the tough questions. Our members expect no less of us. Quality is still not on every physician’s agenda and we need to change that so that it becomes standard practice and not an add-on.
Governance knowledge - I love excellence in governance and have been mentored over the years by the best. Governance is the key to high performing organizations.
Teamwork / Collegiality - I am a huge believer in honest, highly effective teamwork and the strength of collegiality. I am easy to get along with but I have no patience for any forms of bullying or harassment.
I strongly believe that, collectively, my eclectic training, diverse life experiences and my eager willingness to roll up my sleeves will serve the CMPA well.
