Director, Communications

Location: Ottawa, Canada

Established in 1901, the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) is a not-for-profit organization that provides advice, medical-legal assistance and risk management education to more than 97,000 Canadian physicians.  The CMPA’s medical-legal protection enables physicians to practice confidently and to make decisions that result in better patient care and a more efficient healthcare system. On behalf of its members, the CMPA provides appropriate compensation to patients proven to have been harmed through negligent medical care.

As an essential component of the healthcare system, the CMPA is firmly committed to protecting the professional integrity of physicians and promoting safe medical care. CMPA’s Communications team supports these efforts and is a core strategic and operational resource to the entire organization.

As Director of Communications and a member of the senior management team, you report to the Associate Executive Director/Managing Director, Safe Medical Care and work closely with the CEO on matters related to strategic communications, brand management and external/stakeholder relations. You lead a team of dedicated professionals, create the department’s vision, develop long and short-term initiatives and plans, direct the human resources and operations of the department, and provide counsel and strategic and operational direction on a range of issues.  Your role will encompass all communications including media and stakeholder relations, branding, member communications, internal and external communications, publications, and reputational management.  Your role also has an important Board-facing function, directly supporting the Member and Stakeholder Relations Committee of Council, and establishing corporate communications priorities for the committee’s consideration.

As the ideal candidate, you are an experienced and fluently bilingual communications professional who has led and managed teams covering all areas of communications. You are recognized and respected by your peers as a skilled, collaborative and highly credible expert.  As a manager and leader, you are team-oriented, resourceful, inclusive and committed to the mentorship and professional development of your staff.  Colleagues value your strategic perspective and regularly call on you for advice on all matters requiring a sophisticated communications lens.  At the senior management table, you are an active and engaged participant, voicing concerns, sharing ideas, debating issues, and providing options for the team to consider.  Your experience in a health care organization would be an asset, as would your branding, stakeholder relations, and advocacy expertise.
