Dealing with disruptive behaviour: building a culture of accountability

Disruptive behaviour is a complex problem to manage. Establishing a culture of accountability and managing behavioural choices accordingly can be a powerful tool in ensuring the fair and transparent management of such behaviours.

Learning objectives:
Given a culture of accountability framework the leader will be able to
  • Explain the importance of establishing values in creating a highly reliable system for managing physician performance
  • Describe the three behaviours that threaten patient safety
  • Contrast 3 approaches to dealing with the above behaviours
  • Explain the elements of accountability at the system and provider levels

All physician leaders have personal examples of situations where they could benefit from the advice and support of a colleague. Having come prepared with a real case, participants will have the opportunity to anonymously discuss their situation and to develop a practical approach to addressing it using the principles learned

Learning objectives:
Using a personal example of a disruptive behaviour situation to engage a colleague in discussion, the participants will be able to:
  • Construct a customized, practical and stepwise strategy to dealing with their issue, which encompasses elements of accountability, fairness and compassion
  • Predict two potential roadblocks or push-backs they might encounter
  • Propose a potential mitigating solution to the above
