Lisa Calder, MD, MSc, FRCPC
Chief Executive Officer, CMPA

Dr. Calder completed her Medical Degree at the University of Western Ontario. She has a Master of Science in epidemiology from the University of Ottawa, where she also completed her Royal College Emergency Medicine residency and an emergency medicine research fellowship.

She then pursued her passion for patient safety by completing two additional fellowships: the Patient Safety Fellowship in Emergency Medicine from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation, and the American Hospital Association’s Fellowship in Patient Safety Leadership.

As a researcher, she has published close to 90 peer-reviewed publications and has been successful in securing research funding, including over 2 million dollars as principal investigator.

Dr. Calder is an associate professor at the University of Ottawa’s Department of Emergency Medicine, and has received the University of Ottawa’s Excellence in Emergency Medicine Quality and Safety Award as well as the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians’ Teacher of the Year Award.

Dr. Calder spent more than a decade practising as an emergency physician in Ottawa before joining the CMPA in 2015 as the director of Medical Care Analytics. She was appointed CEO of the CMPA in August 2020. Her areas of focus are to be there for members, modernize the CMPA, and do so in a collaborative way.

Executive Director, Financial Services and Chief Financial Officer, CMPA

Mr. Cory Garbolinsky is the CMPA’s Executive Director of Financial Services and Chief Financial Officer. His responsibilities encompass the Association’s finance, investment, and actuarial functions.

Mr. Garbolinsky joined the CMPA in 2012 as the Director of Finance. Prior to the CMPA, he worked as the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President Finance for International Datacasting Corporation, previously a TSX listed technology company. Mr. Garbolinsky obtained his Chartered Accounting designation in 1998 and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Manitoba in 1995.

Katy Shufelt, BSc Hon, MD, FRCPC
1st Vice-President and Chair, Audit Committee, CMPA

Dr. Katy Shufelt is an interventional cardiologist practising in Peterborough, Ontario. She is an alumnus of University of Ottawa medical school, University of Toronto Internal Medicine and Cardiology residency programs and McMaster University Interventional Cardiology fellowship.

She is part of a dedicated team of four interventional cardiologists who provide services to the large geographical area served by Peterborough Regional Health Centre. She has special interests in complex coronary angioplasty, safe medical care, physician wellness, and corporate governance.

Dr. Shufelt supervises residents as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Queen’s University, and is an honorary associate professor in the Department of Biology at Trent University.

Dr. Shufelt is proud to have the trust of Ontario physicians in her third term as a CMPA Councillor and as the CMPA 1st vice-president. This work allows her to extend her interests in a leadership role to ensure Canadian physicians have a strong organization to support their medico-legal needs and ability to provide safe medical care. She has deepened her knowledge about corporate governance topics including financial oversight, risk assessment, and digital transformation through courses at Harvard Business School and Columbia Business School. Dr. Shufelt is committed to the CMPA’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy and addressing inequities in Canadian health care delivery and leadership.

Dr. Birinder Singh is the medical director of Eglinton Station Medical Centre in midtown Toronto where he practices family medicine. He is also a lawyer, having completed a combined MD/LLB degree at Western University.

Dr. Singh completed a judicial clerkship under The Honourable Mr. Justice Ian Binnie of the Supreme Court of Canada, followed by family medicine residency at the Toronto Western Hospital.

Dr. Singh has a varied background, having been a medical inspector at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, a legal consultant for interveners at the Supreme Court of Canada, an adjunct professor in the Family Medicine program at the University of Toronto, and a board member of Médecins Sans Frontières Canada. He is a member of the Law Society of Ontario and is a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Elected to CMPA Council in 2014, Dr. Singh provides guidance and leadership to several Council committees. He has served on the Executive Committee and several governance committees. He has acted as chair of the Investment Committee, Human Resources and Compensation Committee, and Pension Committee. Prior to his election as president, Dr. Singh served as the CMPA’s first vice-president.

Kawennanoron Cindy White

Kawennanoron Cindy White is Onondaga Snipe Clan from the Mohawk community of Akwesasne, currently living in the Six Nations Grand River Territory. Cindy has been actively engaged in her personal healing and spiritual training since 1996.

She attended the State University of New York at Plattsburgh where she studied nursing and received a Bachelor of Science degree.

Kawennanoron is a Ceremonial Leader and Traditional Healer. She has travelled among First Nations and across the globe to bring the Sacred Fire. As she works, she creates a sacred space for individuals to meet with spirit for healing and transformation. In her role as the Elder-in-Residence, Cindy provides guidance for program development and implementation of practices and protocols specific to Indigenous peoples, personal consultation, and mentorship to learners and staff at Women’s College Hospital.
