Dr. Claude Mercier is a pediatric neurosurgeon practising at the Centre hospitalier universitaire (CHU) Sainte-Justine in Montreal, Québec. Upon graduating from the Université de Sherbrooke, Dr. Mercier practised for a year in the Comoro Islands in Africa as a general practitioner, followed by a year in a rural community in Québec. Dr. Mercier went on to do his neurosurgical training at the Université de Montréal and a one-year fellowship in France.
Chief of neurosurgery at the CHU Sainte-Justine for over 30 years, Dr. Mercier has served on a number of hospital committees, including as president of the bioethics committee. He is a clinical associate professor in the departments of surgery and neurosciences at the Université de Montréal, where he has also been director of the medico-legal expertise program since 2018.
Dr. Mercier is a member of many international neurosurgical societies, an author of numerous peer-reviewed publications, and has participated in the pediatric training of most neurosurgeons in Québec. His interest in safe medical care led to his involvement in the development of a neurosurgery simulator with the National Research Council of Canada.
