Obstetrics and gynecology with a subspecialty in maternal fetal medicine

Dr. Heather Scott is an obstetrician and gynecologist with a sub-specialty in maternal fetal medicine at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A graduate of Dalhousie University, she completed a residency in family medicine at Queens University and worked as a family physician before returning to Dalhousie University where she completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology followed by a maternal fetal medicine fellowship in Ottawa.

Dr. Scott is an associate professor and the Director of the Global Health Equity and Advocacy Unit at Dalhousie University. She is the Head of Obstetrics at the IWK Health Centre and has just recently completed a sabbatical as a maternal consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO). She continues to work as a consultant with the WHO on projects focused on care provider education and guidance.

Previously, Dr. Scott was the obstetrical director of the Reproductive Care Program of Nova Scotia, and the chair of the External Advisory Committee of the Canadian Perinatal Surveillance System. She has worked provincially and nationally on severe maternal morbidity and mortality surveillance.

Dr. Scott has been active in research in sub-Saharan Africa. She is an advocate for health equity and received the Dr. John Savage Memorial Award for Faculty Leadership in Global Health in recognition of this work.
