The WSP is a peer support program that offers short-term, one on one support for CMPA members experiencing significant distress related to a medico-legal event. The support is provided by a Physician Advisor from the Physician Support and Wellness department. Typically, members receive 1-3 peer support calls that last 45-60 minutes.
The WSP provides peer support to members who are experiencing significant emotional distress in relation to a medico-legal event. The program offers a conversation with a supportive colleague and does not create a therapeutic or treating relationship. The WSP provides a confidential space which permits members to speak openly about their emotional challenges in relation to their medico-legal situation.
The WSP does NOT provide support for members in crisis who require immediate help. Members in crisis should contact their health care team, go to the Emergency room, and/or access their provincial or territorial physician health program distress line.
The WSP Physician Advisor is a supportive colleague providing peer support; this does not constitute a treating or therapeutic relationship. The Physician Advisor may suggest other support if needed, such as the member’s family physician, or the Provincial or Territorial Health Program.
Access to the WSP is by referral only. If you are a CMPA member currently experiencing distress related to a medico-legal event, you can be referred to the WSP by your Physician Advisor from Medico-legal Services (MLS) or by your Provincial counsel if you are already working with legal counsel.
If you are not sure if you qualify for the program or if it is right for you, please contact your MLS Physician Advisor.
