CMPA announces key performance results

OTTAWA, August 20, 2025—The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) held its 2025 Annual Meeting today, during which President, Dr. Birinder Singh, and CEO, Dr. Lisa Calder, shared how the CMPA has advanced on its 2023-2026 Strategic Plan. The event was held both online and onsite in Toronto, Ontario.

A strong and stable organization

During the annual meeting, Dr. Calder highlighted the strength and stability of the organization and how it continues to support members even during the unprecedented challenges facing the healthcare system in Canada.

“The CMPA is actively engaged in responding to these challenges and continues to enhance its support for members, helping them deliver safe medical care.  said Dr. Calder. “We  also continue to engage with governments and other healthcare organizations to strengthen our healthcare system.”

Delivering on  our mandate

The Association highlighted the results of its 2025 general membership survey, demonstrating that CMPA continues to maintain the trust and respect of its member physicians. Notably, 97% of respondents agreed that CMPA services met the medico-legal needs of the profession, while “trusted” was a top word used to describe the CMPA. Further, 98% of respondents agreed that CMPA’s safe medical care learning and research resources met their needs.

Compensation to patients

In addition to its role in assisting Canadian physicians with medico-legal matters related to their practice, CMPA also provides (on behalf of its members) timely and appropriate compensation to patients proven to have been harmed by negligent care. In 2024, the Association paid $322 million dollars in compensation to patients. Over the past 10 years, CMPA has paid $2.5 billion to patients.

Patient safety education and research

The prevention of patient harm through education, research, and support is central to CMPA’s role. With this in mind, the Association publishes key patient safety-related research, which informs its educational resources and accredited safe medical care learning opportunities.

“In 2024, CMPA delivered 12 peer-reviewed research articles, with over 29,000 views, an AI webinar, position paper and stakeholder guidance,” said Dr. Singh. “We also continued to develop tailored risk information by specialty by issuing 8 new Know Your Risk reports, enabling members to self-assess their medico-legal risks against their peers, all with a goal of improving patient safety.”

Looking ahead, CMPA remains confident in its ability to continue to positively impact the lives of physician members and enhance the safety of medical care.
