OTTAWA, August 19, 2026—The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) is pleased to announce that Dr. Katy Shufelt has commenced her term as President of the Association. Dr. Shufelt was welcomed to her new role at CMPA’s Annual Meeting, held in Calgary, Alberta, today.
Dr. Shufelt is an Interventional Cardiologist practising in Peterborough, Ontario. She has clinical expertise in critically ill cardiac patients, and a special interest in intravascular imaging and complex angioplasty. Dr. Shufelt is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Queen’s University in Family Medicine and an Honorary Associate Professor at Trent University in Biomedical Sciences.
Elected to Council in 2017, Dr. Shufelt served as the CMPA’s first vice-president from 2024-2026. During this time, she has honed critical competencies in strategic planning, financial stewardship, legal services oversight, and equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
“Dr. Shufelt brings deep clinical expertise, a strong commitment to safe medical care, and a member-focused approach to governance.” said outgoing President, Dr. Birinder Singh. “I look forward to seeing her guide CMPA’s next chapter of physician support.”
During CMPA’s Annual Meeting, Dr. Lisa Calder, CEO, expressed her gratitude on behalf of the Association to Dr. Singh for his dedication to the role of President, and welcomed Dr. Shufelt as the CMPA’s incoming President.
“Over the past two years as President — and over his12 years of service to the Association — Dr. Singh has brought wisdom, steadiness, and deep commitment to CMPA and its members,” said Dr. Calder. “I’m also pleased welcome Dr. Shufelt in her role as CMPA President. I look forward to collaborating with her to implement our new Strategic Plan and deliver on CMPA’s commitment to help reduce members’ medico-legal risk and support safe medical care.”
“It’s an honour to take on the role of President of the CMPA, and to serve alongside such a dedicated Council, management team, and community of members,” said Dr. Shufelt. “I step into this role with a strong sense of responsibility — to be a thoughtful and prudent steward of the resources entrusted to us by members,” she added. “CMPA is a learning organization, 125 years strong and still evolving. Its unwavering commitment to protect the integrity of Canadian physicians ensures that we can focus on what matters most: caring for our patients. That commitment will be the foundation and guiding principle of my leadership.”
Dr. Shufelt will serve a two-year term as CMPA President, ending at the CMPA Annual Meeting in 2028.
