When harm from healthcare delivery occurs

Male patient in bed surrounded by female caregiver and male physicianAsk any physician what they hope and strive for when treating a patient, and they will undoubtedly express a desire for a positive or optimistic outcome and, at worst, that nothing will go wrong. This is the nature of medicine: "Cure sometimes, care always, but first, do not harm."

The unfortunate reality is patients do sometimes suffer adversely from medical treatment, often because of a confluence of circumstances, events, and decisions that, individually, might not have resulted in a problem at all.

Ideally, the harm patients experience would never be the result of a provider's negligent breach of the duty of care.
