Candidate statement
I am seeking election to the CMPA Council to contribute my experience as a clinician, academic leader, researcher, & national advocate to the Association’s mandate of protecting physicians & promoting safe medical care. With over 25 years in anesthesiology—much of it in high-risk obstetric & perioperative environments. I bring a deep understanding of the clinical, organizational, & medico-legal challenges facing both Canadian and NL physicians. My work as an expert witness for CMPA has strengthened my appreciation for its commitment to fairness, evidence-informed guidance, & physician-to-physician support.
As former Interim Dean of Medicine at Memorial & Past President of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society, I have led complex organizations through system pressures, strategic change & policy development. I bring extensive governance training & experience, financial oversight, & organizational accountability—competencies essential for supporting CMPA’s stewardship of member resources & ensuring alignment between strategy & execution. My career has been grounded in patient safety, research, & education. I have led national studies, contributed to clinical guidelines, & taught extensively in crisis management, professionalism, EDI, & health systems-based practice. These experiences align directly with CMPA’s goal of advancing safe medical care & equipping members to navigate evolving risk. I bring a strong commitment to equity, diversity, & inclusion, having co-led anti-racism initiatives, EDI curriculum development, & culture-of-safety work across institutions. As a woman leader from Atlantic Canada, I would contribute meaningfully to Council diversity, offering regional insight & lived experience appreciating unique practice realities in NL.
I believe today’s most pressing issues include system strain, burnout, documentation & digital complexity, AI integration, & heightened expectations for transparency & social accountability. CMPA’s role in supporting physicians through these pressures—while maintaining fairness, responsible stewardship, & national leadership—is vital. Transitioning from my academic administration career, I offer CMPA members & Council a collaborative leadership style, strong governance expertise, a commitment to social accountability & a sustained dedication to safe medical care & physician well-being. It would be an honour to serve & help strengthen CMPA’s essential role in supporting our profession & Canada’s healthcare system.
