Candidate statement
Thank you for considering me for a second term on CMPA council. The CMPA plays not only a fundamental role in providing physicians with medico-legal defense and indemnification, it also plays a critical role in physician well-being and education. Its importance cannot be overstated. Over the past three years I have expanded my knowledge and understanding of the CMPA and its mission enormously. If re-elected, I will continue to ensure the CMPA remains there for physicians, committed to defending them and looking out for their well-being. I will work with the CMPA to address new medico-legal risks as well as assisting it in adapting to a changing governance and legal environment.
Along with an increasing expertise in governance and medico-legal matters, I bring to the CMPA council a strong background in medical ethics and teaching. I have co-chaired the Ethics Curriculum at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine for the past 15 years. My MSc (Bioethics 2005) involved an exploration of industry-sponsored medical research and conflict of interest. Most recently, I have co-authored a new edition of a well-known textbook in bioethics, Doing Right: A Practical Guide to Ethics for Medical Trainees and Physicians (Oxford University Press, 2019). I have deep knowledge around many medico-legal issues which affect physicians. While I appreciate the role of council is primarily to develop policy and administrative governance at the CMPA, I think my background in bioethics, education and administration will continue to be a valuable resource to the CMPA.
As far as diversity is concerned, I bring unique and thoughtful perspectives to many issues and a deep openness and humility to understand alternative viewpoints.
As a physician with over 25 years of surgical experience, I also bring to the CMPA council an intimate knowledge of front-line medical issues facing CMPA members. I am confident my judgment and communication skills are an asset to council. And finally, as anyone working in the medical field knows, good medicine is grounded in a team approach and a culture of respect for all members of the team. This is a guiding principle of my life, and it is how I function on council.
The past three years working with the CMPA has taught me just how critical and central the CMPA is for physicians. If re-elected, I will continue work diligently to fulfil my role on council and subcommittees. I believe successful organizations must change and grow in order to remain effective and relevant. The CMPA is no different. I will continue to bring to council new ideas, robust curiosity, and willingness to question the status quo. Thank you for your consideration.
