October 6, 2026
Dear colleagues,
It’s an honour to serve as CMPA President. As I begin my term, my focus is clear: protecting the resources entrusted to us by members and ensuring CMPA continues to provide physicians with the support they need.
2026 Annual Meeting recap
If you missed the 2026 Annual Meeting in Calgary, here are three updates worth knowing. Videos and transcripts of the meeting are also available on our website.
Membership fees for 2027
Watch Dr. Lisa Clader, CEO, present the 2027 Regional fees video [YouTube video] for more information or look up your 2027 fee on the Fees and payment methods page.
Fees will remain largely stable in British Columbia and Alberta, where the average member fee will be $5,325. The average member fee will decrease by 7.5% in Ontario to $6,068, reflecting the province’s strong current and projected financial position. In Québec, the average member fee will increase by 15% to $515, remaining the lowest in the country. In Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Atlantic Provinces, and the Territories, the average member fee will increase by 12.5% to $1,917 to better align with projected medico-legal costs.
Supporting the safe adoption and implementation of AI
Watch A Year in review [YouTube video] for more on AI and other recent initiatives or explore our 2025 Annual Report.
We are helping ensure AI is adopted safely and responsibly in healthcare. In 2025, we shared CMPA’s medico-legal perspective on AI with 17 organizations and working groups across Canada, with the aim of protecting the interests of our members and promoting safe medical care.
Internally, we strengthened our own AI readiness by completing a comprehensive needs assessment and finalizing an ethical AI framework to guide the responsible adoption of AI across CMPA.
New Strategic Plan
Watch Looking to the future [YouTube video] for a preview of the plan and stay tuned for its launch in 2027.
Details of our 2027-2029 Strategic Plan were shared, outlining what members can expect from CMPA in the coming years. Our top priorities will be:
- bringing prevention and protection closer together to provide more proactive support and help you reduce your medico-legal risk; and
- using AI responsibly to improve how we work and help physicians navigate a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.
For more from the 2026 Annual Meeting, I invite you to watch the full event [YouTube video] or go directly to these key moments:
As we implement our 2027–2029 Strategic Plan, continue our governance transformation, and respond to a rapidly evolving healthcare and medico-legal environment, our focus will remain on providing you with dependable protection and increasingly proactive support.
CMPA’s mission has never been more important. By protecting the integrity of Canadian physicians and promoting safe medical care, CMPA helps you focus on what matters most: caring for patients. That commitment will be the foundation and guiding principle of my leadership.
I look forward to listening to members and working with you as we move CMPA forward together.
With warm regards,
Katy Shufelt, MD, FRCPC Cardiology, ICD.D
